Steampunk WW1 Gas Mask

This time, I decided to model this steampunk gas mask I found on deviant art. The helmet was molded by Dragon Armoury below is a link to it and a few images of it.

I then began blocking in the model by doing the following:

The challenge going into this was how to create the face of the mask. The simple shapes of sphere and cylinder for the cover and gas canisters are easily identifiable.

I originally tried a cube but ended up going with a plane and did the following to get the overall shape of the mask

A) Made it the length of the head and added a couple edges and shaped the nose piece.

The goal of the face portion was to create half the mask and symmetry it over this way, the mask is correct on both sides with regards to shape and proportion.

B) The side edge was then extended and extra edges were added to begin forming the rest of the face mask.

C) Vertices were also adjusted to create the shape of the raised cheek and the indent in the lower portion of the mask.

The top looked to flat so I remade it so that it would be rounder and look more like the top in the reference.

It was relatively easy, I just created a cube, added a turbosmooth and a spherify modifier to it and then cut it in half and rescaled it.

The mask was to plain to me. It needed some tweaking to make it “my own.” I know I’m making it from a photograph and it’s basically the same but I wanted to change the style of the mask.

So I broke up the face into three sections and created insets so that it looked like the pieces fit together to create the mask. I also added some teeth to the mouth area of the mask to give it a more menacing and aggressive look

I wanted to show my ability to create a low poly for a game ready asset so broke it down to a low poly version as well. The final poly count for both the high and low poly were:

High: 488K polys

Low: 3.2K polys

Not ideal low count for a mask in a game but still a significant drop. I figure the ideal poly count for a low poly mask would be maybe 500 polys max.

Right now I just have base standard material colors on it (shown in the render at the top) I’ll be texturing it at a later date to be determined.
